TAKING STOCK. A BRAZEN bald burglar has stolen about $10,000 worth of gear from Melbourne (VK3) radio station SEN 1116 and wheeled it away in a rubbish skip all while presenters were on air in their Richmond Studios. The sports radio station lost much studio equipment including microphones! Detective Senior Constable Drew Laughlin said the crime appeared to be opportunistic, as the man was able to break into the building through an unlocked door from the carpark about 11.40pm. "There were people present, as they were broadcasting live at the time," Sen-Det Laughlin said. The man was inside for 40 minutes, removing items one by one and loading them into a red rubbish skip he found in a nearby carpark. He then wheeled the skip down Bendigo St where it is believed he loaded them into a car and fled. Speaking of Sports Radio, particularly in Melbourne, The Greater 3UZ, returns to the air on Sunday, March 8. Listenership of community radio may not have the reach of the ABC or Commercial Radio but Canberra community radio listeners are getting better reception now that the switch on of a new and higher community radio transmission site at Poppet Hill in Canberra has taken place. A consortium of not-for-profit broadcasters, ArtSoundFM, 1CMS FM, and 1WAY FM, will manage the new facility, the culmination of eight years of planning. The Poppet Hill transmitter site replaces older facilities at Black Mountain Tower. Because it is at a slightly higher elevation and is using new equipment the new site will deliver a stronger and higher quality signal to many of the 63,000 people who, according to the 2014 McNair Ingenuity Survey, listen to community radio in Canberra. radioinfo.com.au/news/canberra-community-radio-reaches-new-heights Radioinfo.com.au STORM IN CQ The Central Queensland Amateur Radio Association activated on 40 meters (not on Emergency Centre of Activity 7.110, but locally on 7098 kHz and a 2m repeater,) and told Jim Linton the chairman of the IARU Region 3 Disaster Communications Committee they were on standby for emergency communications to and from nursing homes in the region. No other word came in from QLD WICEN and luckily the MAYBE incorrectly rated cyclone (Some say cat 5 others cat 3) fizzled out before hitting the Brisbane region on its Friday projected pathway. Quite a few local Mackay and Rocky hams missed it entirely by appearing at Wyong Field Day! The Queensland State Government has donated $1 million to four charities helping with the Tropical Cyclone Marcia relief efforts. The money will be shared by the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul and Uniting Care. For many, the clean-up is still underway with a long road ahead and 1 week after the cyclone still some 21,000 homes without 240 volts! As technology progresses, and patterns of usage change, Band plans need to be periodically reviewed and updated to ensure they meet current needs, and also that, as much as possible, band usage remains internationally harmonised. Following a lengthy period of public consultation the Band plan changes are now released as a "Draft for Adoption". Ten (10) comments only from all we VK amateurs were received as follow: 630 metres - 6 comments 6 metre band - 3 comments 2 metre and 70 cm bands - 1 comment to date. If no serious deficiencies are identified the updated Band plans will come into effect on the 15th March, 2015. The two metre and 70cm Band plans are also under review, and are expected to be finalised during the second half of this year. (sourced to wia front page news) HAMS ACROSS AUSTRALIA. VK2 ADVANCE COURSE MATERIAL AVAILABLE. A week of intense advanced training has paid off for one of Summerland's (Lismore VK2) Queensland members, Ade VK4VKF. He passed his Advanced Theory exam and is now awaiting his advanced callsign. A major spin-off of the week's training is that Summerland now have an acceptable set of training notes for the advanced theory exam. The reference material is largely based on the UK's Chelmsford club and the New Zealand NZART. The SARC modules break the syllabus up into 26 easier to tackle steps. Each module lists the references you should read and the key points you need for the exam. Summerland already have local members working through the modules. The modules will get a quick tidy up and then placed on the web soon. Assembling the station will happen during Friday afternoon 24th April with assistance of TARCadians plus some material support from the Australian Army. During the operation of AX4WIT guests from the Army, Navy and Air Force will witness the use of CW and AM and might even have a go themselves. The station will be ideally located for cheering on participants in the ANZAC 100 march and the two outdoor big screens will be clearly visible from the station for the live broadcast of events from Gallipoli and Villers Bretonneau. Currently an experimental repeater linking trial is under way on VK7RMD UHF. The new system is under development by the NE Victoria Amateur Radio club and has three main guidelines. It has to be cheap (under $100). Completely Open source hardware and software. A form of control to comply with the Amateur LCD. The linking node is setup to be run on a Raspberry PI (so no taking photos) and differs from EchoLink and IRLP in that it runs from peer to peer rather than requiring a master server. The audio codec is designed to be very efficient in bandwidth usage and yet provide excellent audio quality. Currently there are only four nodes operating but two of those are in Tasmania. This is an all Australian development. Details can be found on www.nevarc.net.au VK8 VI8ANZAC is on the air The Darwin Amateur Radio Club (DARC) continues to be active with the VI8ANZAC callsign to mark the Albert Chalmers Borella journey re-enactment - and has caused many dog-piles on the bands. DARC President Gary Gibson VK8GN reports that concentration has been on 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m. The lower bands are a bit of a challenge during the Australian northern wet season with very high noise levels. There have been good openings to Europe on 10m, and many other countries including VK are being worked all the bands. High interest has been generated in VI8ANZAC going by the large number of look-ups on QRZ.com The commemorative event marks the historic trek to enlist in WWI by Albert Borella. The 33 year old went from Tennant Creek to Darwin which then had no sign-up point, and on to Townsville in Queensland by boat for enlistment. Albert Borella served at Gallipoli in 1915 for two months, before going to the Western Front in France and Belgium. He was wounded in action, decorated with the Military Medal, mentioned by Winston Churchill in military dispatches, and for valour in combat - awarded the Victoria Cross. Each April 25 is ANZAC Day in Australia, to honour those who fought for the first time as the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp (ANZAC) at Gallipoli in Turkey, then elsewhere, and the service men and women in all subsequent conflicts. This year is the Centenary of ANZAC. A number of events are being held in Australia and aboard. The Darwin Amateur Radio Club has the WIA ANZAC 100 callsign VI8ANZAC until March 3. (Jim Linton VK3PC) DISCUSSION POINT What use is an F-call? During the week I was spending a little time with an experienced amateur and I lamented that getting ferrite cores locally was a trial in futility. I'd spent hours attempting to find a reliable supplier and as of yet have not actually succeeded. I want to experiment with ferrite cores to build some antennas and to test different balun designs, seeing that the Internet is full of them, each with different opinions on what is good and bad, what works best and how to magically make something work with a balun. Of course I can read all I want, but actually getting your hands dirty is generally a better way to get a feel for what happens and what's needed. It was suggested that I could make an equivalent solution, creating a choke using coax cable, 6 inches, 6 windings was the suggestion. Since then I've also found 4 and 4 and 8 and 8 and other variations. I should note that I've not yet built one with all the other distractions in my life, but I'm feeling much less worried about locating a ferrite and much more confident that such a choke might get me what I need, the ability to build a dipole and string it up without RF coming back into my shack - which currently is my car. What this taught me is that the Internet is full of wonderful suggestions, but just chewing the fat with someone who's been around the block a couple of times will give you some hands on experience, which might get you to the next step of your understanding of Amateur Radio. So, talk to your fellow amateurs, buy them a coffee and see what they have to say. Broadcaster Sky in Europe is "not ruling out" the possibility of delivering 4K TV content over the web in the future in a similar way to Netflix, after staging early trials filming in the ultra HD format. Speaking at SES Ultra HD conference in London last week, Sky's chief engineer of broadcast strategy, Chris Johns, said that there was "no reason" Sky couldn't launch a 4K channel now if there was compelling enough content to do so. BLUR Essex-born radio amateur Dave Rowntree M6DRQ is a member of the band Blur and are to release their first new studio album for 12 years The new album will be called The Magic Whip and a track - Go Out - has been released on the music streaming service Spotify. The Telegraph newspaper reports the band will play at London's BST Hyde Park gig on Saturday, June 20. telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/11422729/Blur-to-release-first-studio-album-for-12-years.html TWITTER PILL TO SWALLOW US scientists have invented a transmitter within a pill that can tweet information to the patient or their doctor or later downloaded via a worn small electrical patch. RF technology makes sure patients are taking their medication and stops fake pills being consumed, or at least if a fake is swallowed you are tweeted with a warning to take another pill! RFID is widely used and is embedded in each pill that can be encrypted. Project ULTRA helped Alan Turing crack code The Ottawa Citizen has interviewed Ernie Brown about his work in Project ULTRA during WWII. He is one of the last surviving members of a crack team of radio interceptors who were stationed in a secret building in the Canada's capital during the Second World War under a classified program codenamed ULTRA. There, they intercepted coded enemy messages, and relayed them back to the UK. http://ottawacitizen.com/opinion/columnists/king-how-ottawas-project-ultra-helped-alan-turing-crack-nazi-code Amateur radio based group rescues released broadcast frequency When the 'Deutsche Welle' decided to close down one of their 500 KW shortwave broadcast transmitters near Munich at the end of 2012, a group of German radio amateurs applied for and were allocated the then available short wave frequency of 6070 KHz in 2013. This group now have an operational 10KW station on the frequency, using the driver stages from the old Deutsche Welle transmitter. The rest of the transmitter was built by and is run by Rainer DB8QC . The licence allow transmission 24/7, but currently mainly weekends. Another Rainer DF2NU who is one of the group running the station and the president of the Munich South section of the DARC, hopes to be able to broadcast more often once sufficient content is available however they are already seeing other broadcasters such as Radio China moving onto the frequency in the evenings as those stations perceive 6070 KHz as a free frequency. 6070 - watch this space. MAKE LOVE NOT WAR "Bombers riding shotgun in the sky." In a town better known for peace and music, two radio stations are battling over a trademark dispute involving the difference between "Radio Woodstock" and "Woodstock Radio." That was before a trademark dispute is settled with stations claiming 'foul' over use of the famous town's name. Let's hope they calm down and "get themselves back to the garden." soon! ============================================================================= ARNEWSLINE NASA ANNOUNCES SUBMERSIBLE TO EXPLORE OCEANS OF TITAN NASA has announced that it will develop a new nuclear robotic submersible, which they could use to explore the oceans on Saturn's frozen moon Titan and radio its findings back to Earth. With more on this story, Jim Damron N8TMW. [Jim D.:] Describing the submarine in a recently released PDF document, the space agency said it was proposed as a way to explore Kraken Mare, a body of liquid on Titan spotted by the Cassini spacecraft in 2007. Kraken Mare is believed to be the largest sea or lake in the northern portion of Titan. Powered by a radioisotope Stirling generator power source, the submarine would be efficient enough to complete a 90-day, 2000-kilometer under sea journey. Researchers working on this project admit that they are concerned that it would be hard for the submarine to send signals from under the liquid on Titan back to Earth, as the direct transmission. They believe that doing so would require a large antenna and one option being considered is concealing it in the submersible vehicle's fin. GB1BST - British Summer Time 2015 Woody's Top Youth Hostel in Lincolnshire will be the venue for the 2015 GB 1 BST Special Event Station, celebrating the start of British Summer Time, on March 27-29 Situated on the Greenwich Meridian between Louth and Horncastle, Woody's Top is a rather remote and quiet location in the southern part of the Lincolnshire Wolds. The Lincolnshire Wolds is a range of hills in the county of Lincolnshire, England and is deemed the highest area of land in eastern England, between Yorkshire and Kent. Radio operations are scheduled to start late on 27th March with test transmissions on the 40m, 20m, 17m and 2m bands which will be used during the weekend event. 4S7KKG DC0KK will active as 4S7KKG from Sri Lanka through until April 10. Lusitania Radio Club The Lusitania Radio Club will be running a Special Event Station with the callsign EI 100 MFA to mark the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania on the 7th May 1915. The station will operate from 6th to 10th May from a site near the Old Head of Kinsale Lighthouse Co, Cork or from the Lighthouse itself. LRC100@email.com 4 U 20 B. This station is located in Brindisi, Italy and commemorates the 20th anniversary of the UN Logistics Base there. 4 U 20 B will be used until next July and the QSL manager is 9 A 2 AA. HE200GE commemorates the 200th anniversary of Geneva's entrance into the Swiss Confederation. The beginnings of modern Switzerland go back to the year 1291, when the three German language Alpine forest areas signed the Federal Charter. Over the centuries more cantons allied themselves to the original three and among the last was the Republic of Geneva on 19th May 1815. BACK TO CONTEST NEWS AND THE JOHN MOYLE MEMORIAL FIELD DAY Good Morning This Denis, VK4AE, WIA coordinator for the John Moyle Memorial Field Day 2015. This year the contest will occur over the weekend of Saturday the 21st to Sunday the 22nd March, the duration of the contest will be from UTC 0100 on the Saturday to 0059 UTC on Sunday. Now is the time to complete your planning for the field day contest as there is only a couple of weeks to go before the event. You must make sure that everything is in order and operating and all of the many little pieces that are needed to put your station onto the airwaves are all in the required place. Nothing worse than to arrive at your chosen spot, only to find you have forgotten to pack some other piece of gear, or some other equally essential accessory. Make sure that the location you have chosen is still accessible after this summer's onslaught from flood cyclone and bushfire, the roads into the place have not been closed. So much with that aspect of preparation, there is still time to download the latest version of free program contest logging VKCL (VK Contest Log) available from Mike (VK3AVV)'s website where you can check you have the latest version. A number of people last year used an older version of the program and deprived themselves of a significant number of points that were allowed under later rule changes. So it is well worth the effort to make sure you have the latest version. Submitting the field day log this year is not optional - If you work any station more than 5 times during the field day you must submit a log to verify those contacts. This applies if you intend to operate either as a portable or as a home station. WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- FINAL FRONTIER JPL Plans 2401 MHz Lunar Ranging Experiment March 3 NASA Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) will transmit a narrow band signal at about 2041 MHz illuminating a spot on the moon (probably centred on Tycho) about 1000km in diameter early in the morning of 3 March between about 0630 to 0900 UTC. JPL will be transmitting about 20kW from a 34 m aperture. They are planning to have three distinct transmission modes, two will be a CW carrier, and a third mode including a PN ranging code on the signal, probably changing every 45 minutes. The signal should be easy to detect with even a small receive antenna (at least the narrow band signal). If you have a wideband recorder, the ranging code should be easy to recover with post processing. Standard ranging code as defined in 810-005 http://deepspace.jpl.nasa.gov/dsndocs/810-005/214/214-1.pdf The first step in reconfiguring the International Space Station (ISS) for commercial crew missions was completed successfully last weekend, with NASA Expedition 42 astronauts Barry Wilmore and Terry Virts rigging cables during a nearly 7-hour spacewalk. The pair "rigged a series of power and data cables at the forward end of the Harmony module and Pressurized Mating Adapter-2 and routed 340 of 360 feet of cable," NASA said in a statement. The group of six operators operating as K3TN in the recent ARRL International DX Contest (CW) may have made Amateur Radio history by mounting the first completely remote-controlled multioperator contest effort. The scattered K3TN team worked via the Internet through the station of Jack Hammett, K4VV, in Northern Virginia. All of K4VV's operating positions were vacant over the February 21-22 weekend, because the operators were elsewhere, and one participant even managed to operate during the contest from two states Maryland and Florida. "No one was in the K4VV shack for the entire contest!" said Mike Lonneke, W0YR who took part in the contest via K4VV from his own shack in Virginia. Two other operators were in North Carolina. "Perhaps this is a new category Totally Remote (TR)." Lonneke said 3-minute timers at the remote-capable positions allow FCC requirements to be met. The "Team K4VV" contingent made 4224 contacts and logged 556 multipliers for a claimed score of more than 7 million points. SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- SUMMITS ON THE AIR www.sotawatch.org www.sota.org.uk IARU President is new SOTA Mountain Goat One of the latest amateurs to attain Mountain Goat as an activator in the popular Summits on the Air programme will be a familiar figure to many in the amateur radio world. This is because he managed to combine his interest in SOTA whilst at the same time holding the post of IARU Region 1 President. Hans Timmerman PB 2 T who was President up to October last year, has activated summits in no fewer than 15 different countries, spanning the globe. As well as all the latest Club news and information, tomorrow we outline the story of the Square Kilometre Array, the exciting new radio telescope project being built here in Australia and South Africa. The SKA has the potential to provide huge amounts of new astronomical data and to increase our knowledge of the universe. The principal HF transmission is on 20 metres on 14.150 MHz USB commencing at 0100 UTC and is beamed north from Melbourne for Eastern states listeners. Please note that the 0200 UTC 20 metre transmission beamed to Western Australia has now been discontinued. However, at 0200 UTC Phil VK6GX will be transmitting on 40 metres on 7060 kHz LSB for WA country listeners, simultaneously with the transmission via the NewsWest linked repeater system. Additionally, there are other local area relays.
